SamSungDay 18 One day, I was having a dart and a scotch out the back of The Big Top, awaiting the start of a Dropkick Murphys set when Brother Nudge all but ran up to me and chucked my scotch out saying “Sam. Sam. Put that out and come listen to this”. That was when we first heard Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls. The boys ended the set, if I recall, with this song - ‘Four Simple Words’ and my partner and I danced heartily to the acoustic-led punk rock show. It was a revolutionary moment. Here played the best rocking songwriter of our time. We’ve missed bugger all Frank gigs since! I once went to see him twice in 24 hours at The Metro and, on the night before, in Newcastle where the sound tech was kind enough to explode our ears and Frank was kind enough to let me play him a song, like the psychopath that I am, by a skip bin in the car park. Mr. Turner defended my right to finish the song as a bouncer muted my guitar in an anti-climactic final chorus of ‘Poets of Noise’. The tall Englishman expressed kind words about my shakey performance, gave me a couple of set lists and put on another brilliant show the night after. If you haven’t had the pleasure, do listen to his stuff. From early to now, he’s just a brilliant wordsmith. The punk in him is never far away in a strum, which keeps those of us that are inclined to such stylings warm as we follow his sometimes confronting yarns of introspective tribulations and glorious tales of self improvement.
