Love, Ire & Song from Frank Turner’s album of the same name. This is simply the anthem for my generation, and the more time passes the more I become certain of that. When this song first came out I knew it would be with me for a very long time. What I didn’t anticipate was that I’d had over a decade of not listening to Frank Turner much for reasons I still can’t figure out but this song always remained on heavy rotation for me. It’s the centrepiece of a perfect album and if I ever met him, I’d love to ask Frank what he thinks his best song is. His Born to Run. I’ve a feeling it would be this. This song brought about an apathy in me in my 20s that I really regret the more I think about it about it but I’ve thankfully reversed that as I get older. The line about being “let down again by some poor excuse for protest” by the “kids on the left” rang true when I first heard this song and it stunted the activist in me because, well, Frank has a point you can’t argue with. I’ve been meaning to cover this for a long long time so it feels good to finally get it out.
